Beverly Hood : Encounter

du CUSeeMe

I am an Edinburgh based artist. My work explores intimacy, emotion and the physical within new technologies. I am interested in subverting what is traditionally perceived to be a remote, cold and rational medium - technology.

I am also part of the Scottish based electronic artists association elevator. Recent projects include banners a series of art works taking the form of online advertising banners.
Encounter

Encounter, examines online relationships and their development within a remote environment.

The project documents the online conversation between two anonymous artists over a period of 30 days (March 20 - April 18 1998). The conversation and relationship developed using email, IRC and CU-SeeMe. The two artists did not know each other's real names, gender or location and took on the pseudonym's "anon1" and "anon2".

The artist's communicated at least once a day over the 30 day period and their conversation was documented and updated daily on a web site at http://www.furnace.org/encounter. Once a week the conversation opened up to include the "audience" who participated in IRC chats. This provided an opportunity for anon1 and anon2 to communicate in real time and for the audience who had been "listening" to become an active part of the conversation.

On the final day of the project (April 18 1998) the two artists met for a public dinner in Lancaster. The event was broadcast over the Internet and the remote audience was able to interact with the dinners.

I was invited to develop this work as part of the My House & Your House online residencies, co-ordinated by Furnace, Lancaster and supported by The Arts Council of England.
