Olivia McGilchrist
Olivia McGilchrist is a multi-media artist and educator using Virtual Reality (VR) and video installation to engage with questions about identity and new experiences of embodiment within feminist frameworks. Her upbringing between Jamaica, the UK and France as a visibly white French-Jamaican, pushed her to explore masking as a subversive practice in the Jamaican carnival ‘Jonkonnu’. Since 2015, she has been exploring the potential of VR within multimedia installations; in these installations the head-mounted display becomes an inward-facing mask isolating the viewer from their context, instead of acting as a mask which transforms or hides their identity from others. McGilchrist has exhibited in Canada, Jamaica, USA, Brazil, Germany, Norway, Austria, France, Switzerland, UK.
