Moving beyond the threshold which divides the space between the real and the imaginary-- the physical and the virtual. Dispersed and projecting: I immerse myself and become an(other).
I enter into it.
Gravity shifts, solids become liquid, while space itself expands. The universe I enter is synthetic yet real because it is the construction of my own creation. I project out into the borderless space of the matrix where you and I connect, intertwine and dissolve but never (dis)appear.
Sounds travel beyond the grid. They echo through and reverberate beyond the laws of time(less)ness. My voice is present and filled with meaning-- no longer ambient.
It is here, where expression moves beyond its fragmented self and becomes communication.
BIO
Ms. LaPorta has recently been an Artist-in-Resident at Ars Electronica's FutureLab (Linz, Austria) where she has produced a Web specific video installation titled TRACES. Traces will also be included in the upcoming SEAFAIR '98 Exhibition at the Soros Center for Contemporary Art in Skopje, Macedonia as well as the International Festival for New Film in Split, Croatia.
Ms. LaPorta's work is also included in the ALT-X exhibition, "Being in Cyberspace," where she completed her second net specific work titled SHIFTING. And most recently, her work Translate { } Expression has been included in Leonardo's Electronic Gallery (MIT press.)
Ms. LaPorta's work has been included in the Web Sites for the United Nations' Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, and the Women and Performance On-Line Journal "Sexuality in Cyberspace." An overview of her net-works have recently been shown at in the exhibition "Screens and Memes," at Harvestworks- The Downtown ArtsFestival, NYC.
Ms. LaPorta has recently organized and moderated a symposia on "Women in New Media" for the 16th Annual Women in the Arts Conference at Rutgers University and presented her work at the Feminist Art/Art History Conference at Barnard. She also Moderated a panel discussion for the Women's Caucus of the College Art Association's Conference in 1994 which investigated the relationship between information technologies and Representations of the body.
Ms. LaPorta has also been an Artist-in-Resident at the Experimental Television Center (Owego, New York) where she completed her video short Camera Work which has been screened at the New York International Video Festival, The SoHo Arts Festival and the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. Other videos by Tina LaPorta have been screened at The Kitchen, P.S. 122, Art in General as well as Net casted via the Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University.
During the 1996-97 season, Ms. LaPorta produced the monthly Television show, "CyberFemme TV," on Manhattan Cable Television in which she took on the role of the "flaneur."
Tina's visual work has been published in Ms. Magazine, PForm, Women and Performance, Public Culture, Future Sex, and Crash.
Ms. LaPorta currently teaches courses on Interactive Media at Pratt Institute and Cooper Union. She earned her M.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts in 1994.
